24th annual Maryland and Delaware Coastal Cleanup - Janes Island State Park

24th annual Maryland and Delaware Coastal Cleanup

I pulled two photos from my files to go with the following press release I received from Delmarva Power concerning the 2010 Coastal Cleanup at Janes Island State Park in Crisfield. Cleanup begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 25. Contact Ranger John Somers at 410.968.1565  for more info. This is an area-wide cleanup to help keep our waterways clean, so for my area-wide readers, if you live near one of the cleanup sites, why not get the whole family together and pitch in? After all, we all live downstream.

From Delmarva Power:

The 24th annual Coastal Cleanup will continue on Saturday, September 25 at various locations in Delaware and on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The Cleanup kicked off last weekend at various sites in Maryland.

For the 20th consecutive year, Delmarva Power is partnering with environmental, civic and business organizations throughout the region to support Coastal Cleanup. Each participant will receive an original Coastal Cleanup T-shirt, courtesy of Delmarva Power, the primary corporate sponsor of the event.

The regional Coastal Cleanup is part of International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit group that works to protect the world’s oceans. The types and quantities of trash collected will be itemized. The data will then be used to pinpoint the source of debris, as well as focus on ways to reduce or eliminate waste.

In last year’s cleanup, more than 2,600 volunteers collected approximately 27,000 pounds of trash. The usual soda cans and cigarette butts were found as well as a few oddities, such as a shopping cart, jar of cherry peppers, flagpole and Sponge Bob balloons.

You'll get a cool T-shirt from Delmarva Power.

Umm? I wonder if those cherry peppers were still good?

Oh, I covered this one year for the newspaper, and it was a lot of fun. If I did not have two other events to cover I would be there.
