Bottle Tree

Bottle Tree

“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.” ~ Edward de Bono

I love bottle trees. Their history goes back to the 18th century when they were brought to the United States by African slaves. Back in their homeland, they would use the bottles to capture evil spirits, believing the spirits would be bedazzled by the sun-catching bottles, enter, and be forever lost.

Today, people fashion these "trees" out of real trees, posts with pegs, or use their imaginations to come up with something even more creative. If you have any empty bottles lying around you might want to try a bottle tree. I don't think we have any "evil" spirits in Crisfield, but these bottles certainly catch the eye.
