Watermen

Thought I would share these two photos with you. The first photo is a crabbing boat. The second photo is of two watermen gassing up at the marina before going on an and eel "fishing" trip.

Ford Galaxie

I had a beaut of 1954 Chevy I was going to post along with this photo, but I deleted it; and then I cleaned out my trash bin. I used to have a recovery program, but I must have deleted that, as well. So enjoy this baby blue blast from the past.

I love finding little Easter eggs around Crisfield.

Friday "My Town" Shoot Out from Crisfield: Water, Water, Everywhere...

"Never a ship sails out of the bay but carries my heart as a stowaway." ~ Roselle Mercier Montgomery, The Stowaway

I tested my camera by hanging off the side of our boat for this shot. Be sure and click on photos to enlarge.

This week's assignment came from Hensly in Hawaii. Living on the bay, it worked out well for me! Anyone who wants to join in on our Friday shoot outs can go to our info site and find out how to join up with our "gang" of shooters. I am still editing, and the list of participants in forthcoming. You can always find the list to the right of the scroll bar on this site.

A boat at Somers Cove Marina. I wish our toy was that big.

"Rats with wings." But you gotta love 'em.

I ran into these students from Pinehurst Elementary School in Salisbury, on the city dock. It is not uncommon to see students from all over Maryland eager to hop a ride on a tour boat or mail boat to learn about life on Smith Island or Tangier Island. Adults also come to Crisfield for field trips to the islands. Summers bring tour buses from many states. You might want to check us out!

I could use a little of that. When can I hop aboard?

Somers Cove Marina. Come and sit a spell on our boat. After that, we will put you up for the night in one of our bedrooms (if you don't mind sharing with our cats), or you can cozy up for the night on our boat. It sleeps two.

This is a photo I took last year at a "Relay for Life" run. I could not pass up the water bottle.

I took this on an assignment two years ago. That contraption is a lawnmower. Yes. A lawnmower. The DNR cuts eel grass, dries it out for seeds, and plants the seeds in areas where the eel grass has been depleted. The eel grass is a very important part of a healthy bay. If you click on the photo, you can see the grass being gathered by DNR workers and volunteers. Once the eel grass is moved to the DNR boat, the "Lawnmower Man" makes another run.

I couldn't wait around for the birds to show up.

I am not sure what this lady was washing. She was too far away to shoot with my 200. I was shooting something else, and when I turned around to leave, I saw her and could not pass up a water shot.

If you click on the photo to enlarge, you will see the lady on the boat was shooting me while I was shooting her.

Somers Cove Marina pool is ready for the season.

Sign up for a slip and enjoy our private pool. The kids will love you for it!

Now, folks, if you have never been to a boat docking contest, you need to head on over to Crisfield for Labor Day weekend. We have 3 fun-filled days of non-stop activities during the Annual National Hard Crab Derby & Fair, and one of them is our famous boat docking contest. Working waterman compete in timed exercises, and it is one of the biggest draws around. For tickets and info contact the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce.

Crisfield. Visit us soon. You'll be glad you did! Oh, and now is a good time to get a good deal on one of the several condo units around town.

Gordon's Always Hits the Spot...

Especially when I am in a pinch for time. Friendly people, and always a photo to be had inside or out.

Joseph W. Beach said, "There is indeed, perhaps, no better way to hold communion with the sea than sitting in the sun on the veranda of a fishermen's cafe."

You can hold communion with the bay by talking to the watermen at Gordon's six days a week, from before the sun comes up until 9:00 pm. When you visit Crisfield, be sure and pay a visit. A lot of history to be found at Gordon's. It's one of our treasures.

Note: These are not watermen (they were out working when I took this photo). The watermen can be found early A.M. or right after they unload their day's catch, or on a really windy day. But you don't need watermen to enjoy the flavor of Gordon's. It is truly a slice of Americana.

Be sure to try Gordon's coffee. It has reputation of being the best coffee around. Because Gordon's is closed on Sundays, people buy cups of it late Saturdays so they won't have to go a day without their Gordon's coffee.

Good People, Good Friends...

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one”
~ C.S. Lewis

We have a lot of friendly and interesting people in Crisfield. Today, I want to share two of them with you. Donnie Howard, left, is well known all over Somerset County. He has been active in the Marion Volunteer Fire Department (just outside Crisfield) for almost 50 years. He presently serves as Marion's Fire Police and Safety Officer. I have never seen Donnie without a smile on his face.

Billie Chandlier, owner of the Pizza Shoppe in Crisfield, runs not only a restaurant 7 days a week, she does double duty running a successful catering business. And I thought I worked hard!

We love you Donnie! You, too Billie. Now, do I get a ride in the fire truck and some free pastries?

Happy Memorial Day from Crisfield, Maryland

"The secret of Happiness is Freedom, and the secret of Freedom, Courage." ~ Thucydides

A patriotic Crisfield resident readies his flag for Memorial Day weekend.

I will be busy shooting this weekend, so I will not be able to do any postings until late Monday or Tuesday. I will leave you with a few pre-Memorial Day shots.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and takes time out of their busy schedules to remember those who gave their lives for our freedoms.

How wonderful to see a "V" for Victory painted in the sky at the entrance to the city. The rest of the photos were taken at our city cemetery.
