Governor O’Malley holds press conference at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, June 30, 2012

Hot weather in Maryland, update from Governor O'Malley

***AT 6 PM***GOVERNOR O’MALLEY TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE TO PROVIDE UPDATE ON WEATHER SITUATION IN MARYLAND
REISTERSTOWN, MD (June 30, 2012)TODAY at  6:00 p.m., Governor O’Malley will hold a press conference at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency to provide an update on power outages, damage across the State, impending storms for today and the second consecutive day of extreme heat in the area.

With temperatures expected to reach near 100 in many parts of Maryland again today and impending storms again this evening, power restoration is expected to take several days, it is important that those who have lost air conditioning and who may be at risk for suffering due to the high temperatures and humidity think about ways to remain cool and hydrated.

Some local jurisdictions are likely to open shelters and/or cooling centers. Visiting libraries, malls and other public areas that are air conditioned is suggested. If possible, see if you can visit family or friends whose power works. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages to remain hydrated.

If you have air conditioning and have not lost power, consider opening your home to family members of friends who may not have air conditioning and may not tolerate the heat well.

Stay away from downed wires and please let emergency personnel take the necessary precautions to restore power. For a list of power outages, click here

Sorry I am late posting this. I was out of town. I had my iPad, but not my file photos. Gotta have a file photo to go with a weather update. Stay cool.

4th of July, 2012, in Washington, DC

4th of July, 2012, in Washington, DC
 file photo

This year, I will be photographing fireworks in our nation's capital. I have photographed fireworks all over the country during my many years as a photojournalist, but I have never had the opportunity to cover the events at our National Mall. I am looking forward to it.

Here are some tips from the National Park Service:

FIREWORKS

Fireworks-from-Stage-Area
NPS
Fireworks display, 2011.
WHERE:
Fireworks will be launched from the Reflecting Pool area, and will be visible from many locations in D.C. and Virginia.
WHEN:
Fireworks begin at 9:10 p.m. EDST. Duration 17 minutes. See Things to Do for other events all day long!
VIEWING FROM THE NATIONAL MALL:
  • Plan to arrive early, and to protect yourself from heat-related illness. See Directions and Plan Your Visit.
  • Viewing areas on the National Mall near the Washington Monument and Reflecting Pool will be accessible only through secure access points.
  • Consider wearing hearing protection. These fireworks are BIG and LOUD.
  • Consider wearing eye protection to protect yourself from falling debris.
  • Consider not bringing pets.
  • Immediately following the fireworks, areas along Independence Avenue between the Lincoln Memorial and World War II Memorial will be closed for safety related to the fireworks launch site. The road will re-open after cleanup crews have completed their inspection and removed any hazardous materials.
OTHER VIEWING AREAS:
U.S. Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, National Mall between 14th Street and 3rd Street*, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, The White House Ellipse, West Potomac Park, East Potomac Park, Anacostia Park, U.S. Marine Corps Memorial (Virginia), George Washington Memorial Parkway (Virginia). *Construction between 3rd and 7th Street on the National Mall will affect access to the area.

Slackers

Slackers
I recently made a post in honor of Slacker Day. Yes, there is a real Slacker Day. You are supposed to throw down your work and chill. I thought I would follow up with this photo of me with my grandson. No, I don't smoke. Never have. Never will. Wish he didn't.

My husband took this "posed" photo. Not your typical 64 year old granny; photography keeps me young.

Chesapeake City, MD

Chesapeake City, MD, Tap Room, Chesapeake Inn
Yesterday, I focused on the quaint porches of Chesapeake City, MD. We spent this past Sunday and Monday enjoying the beauty of the waterfront town. Today, I offer up some random photos from our 2 day stay. I definitely recommend this as a destination town. Take your cameras, your bikes, and your appetite.

Be on the lookout for the many historical signs that grace the town.

All that walking made us hungry! And thirsty!

I can't pass up tracking a photo of crabs. Thanks for letting me intrude.

Chesapeake City, MD, the town of cute little porches

Chesapeake City, MD
If I were keeper of the names of cities, I would change the name of Chesapeake City. Not  because I don't like the name. How could one not like a name that rolls so eloquently off the tongue? I would change it because, as I was walking the streets of this quaint, historical town this past weekend, I kept saying to my husband, "What a cute little porch."

The town is lined with businesses, restaurants, B&B's, and private residential homes that have inviting porches that beckon passers-by to take a seat and enjoy the flavor of the town. I love porches. Don't we all?

Yes, I would change the name to the Town of Cute Little Porches. Too long a name? Yes. And since the town went through a name change in 1839 - it used to be called Village of Bohemia - and since I am not the keeper of town names, I will will have to  be happy with the current name. However, when the travel bug beckons me back to Cecil County, Maryland, as it often does, I may say to my husband, "Let's go to the town of Cute Little Porches."
