Only about 2% of Scouts attain the rank of Eagle Scout. We are proud to have among us a Boy Scout who was recently presented with the prestigious Eagle Scout award at an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony held at Holly Grove Mennonite Church. Congratulations to Eagle Scout Richard Cavens. We are all proud of you.

Once again, I have to remind everyone that I can not help with vacation information for 2012. I will be out of Crisfield on and off most of the season, covering other events that will be sure to please my viewers. Like most of you, I make my plans early. This 2012 Labor Day weekend, I will be at the Gaylord National Resort at National Harbor, MD, enjoying Abbey Road on the River, a Beatles tribute festival. More that 75 bands from around the world will be performing. Dates: August 30 - September 3. Five days of peace, love, and rock-n-roll. How could I not? Check it out here.

Crab Derby is not until Labor Day, but all around the country, and in some instances, outside the country, people are making plans to attend Crab Derby, a true Americana event that dates back 47 years. From the Miss Crustacean pageant to the boat docking contest that honors our working watermen, the entire family will enjoy the 64th National Hard Crab Derby, held at Somers Cove Marina.

If you pay attention to the credits under photos in newspapers, you may have noticed that on occasions no credit is given to the photographer. Instead you see the words "File photo,"  a term used in the newspaper business to preview an upcoming event, go with a story line, or announce breaking news. Since I have been backed up editing photos and taking a little time for myself, I decided to pull from my files. In this case, I am previewing the upcoming Strawberry Festival.  I recently announced the date of the festival but thought I should make another announcement for those of you who may have missed it. It is never too late to make plans. It is going to be a great weekend.

Planning a trip to Crisfield? Don't forget the Tawes Museum, named after Governer J. Millard Tawes, the 54th Governor of Maryland.  Governor Tawes served from 1959 - 1967.

Rear of museum...

From the rear, there is a beautiful view of Somers Cove Marina. During warm weather be sure and visit the crab shanty. A live crab-cam is available at the museum's web site during crabbing season.

The Tawes Library, the original home of Governor Tawes, is available for group use or tours and is the starting point of our annual Christmas home tour. Call Tim for details.

Congressman Andy Harris visits Crisfield

This week Congressman Andy Harris stopped in at Gordon's for a chat with locals and enjoyed a hamburger with Crisfield Mayor P.J. Purnell. Harris then spoke at a town hall meeting, held at the Tawes Museum, and later visited several businesses in Crisfield. Read story in March 31 edition of the Crisfield-Somerset County Times.

I would like to welcome Desiree Kohlmeier of My House of Hair to Crisfield, located at 803 West Main Street - 410.968.2585.  Desiree is busy putting the finishing touches on her salon and will shortly offer spa services at salon prices. A tanning bed will also be available. Desiree says she is interested in becoming a Chamber member, something all businesses should consider.  Individuals are also welcome to join the Chamber. We have many events coming up that Chamber members won't want to miss, including our Business after Hours that offers a chance for business owners and individuals to catch up on events, get business tips,  and enjoy an evening of fun, food, and camaraderie.  A town that works together is a town that grows together.


It is always nice to see another business in Crisfield. Welcome, Desiree. Looking forward to your grand opening in a few weeks.

Thanks to everyone who came out for the 2nd fundraiser for the Crisfield cat shelter, held at Mt. Pleasant Church Hall. If you missed this event you missed a delicious breakfast. Looking at all that food, one would have thought IHOP had beamed in a remote restaurant for the morning. Don't miss the next breakfast. Since they were doing take-out orders, I went home with a plate of pancakes. Look below the slide-show to see who enjoyed my left-over butter. Please allow time for slide-show  to load.

After finishing my take-home pancakes I walked away from the kitchen and came back to find Skipper enjoy my left-over butter, his way of giving this breakfast a butter-licking 5 stars.

A little while later I found Czarina trying to place an order. Czarina, though a purebred Siamese, was found starving and near death 2 years ago. Looks like she is doing pretty well now.  I encourage anyone considering a new cat (or dog) to adopt. If you must have a purebred, put your name on a list with your local shelter (shelters get hundreds of thousands of purebreds each year, many of them end up being euthanized)  or do a Internet search for rescue organizations who are breed specific.

Now for some cat (and dog) facts:

FACT: Every 1.5 seconds a shelter animal is killed. That's 192,308 per week or 27,473 pets euthanized every 24 hours, 365 days a year.

FACT: One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years. 

FACT: Over 10 million cats and dogs are killed in shelters each year. Millions more are abandoned, only to suffer from illness or injury before dying. 

FACT: It costs U.S. taxpayers an estimated $2 billion each year to round up, house, kill, and dispose of homeless animals.

FACT: Over 56% of dogs and puppies entering shelters are killed, based on reports from over 1,055 facilities across America. 

FACT: Approximately 71% of cats and kittens entering shelters are killed, based on reports from 1,055 facilities across America. 

FACT: Cats that are not spayed or neutered are at high risk of developing cancer of the testes or uterus.
