Crisfield High School - Welcome to the 2010-2011 School Year!

Crisfield High School

"The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows."  ~ Sydney J. Harris

Need I say that the Maryland blue crab is the official mascot of Crisfield High School? I mean, "Lions and tigers, and bears! oh-my!," may sound fearsome, but getting a crab mad could very well leave you with one less finger. Nothing like the grip of a crab claw on your finger to raise the "ouch" factor.

About a zillion years ago - not that long, but it sounds cool, a crab kept watch over the school grounds. Sometimes in the seventies, ensuing cleanup after a fire wiped clean the memory of the crab. At least until 1999, when a replacement went up.  Around here frost and heavy rains can cause havoc on concrete objects, causing them to rapidly sink. Over the years the last crab went into hibernation, so to speak. Well, the Crisfield mascot is now back, thanks to the the new athletic director, Greg Bozeman, shown left-rear.

I'm sorry I did not know the names of the other people who offered to pose for the photo, because they all worked hard on the landscaping and installation. Being retired, I don't do names anymore. It's a deal I made with myself. Imagine having to get everyone's name in a photo for a deadline? I did that for way too many years. I do want to thank everyone who was part of getting the Crisfield mascot back on duty. It takes a village...

Good Luck to the Crisfield Crabbers!

That said, let me welcome everyone  back to school at Crisfield High School and at all the other schools in Somerset County. Today is the opening day of school for administrators, faculty members, and students.

You know, being an administrator or teacher is hard work. I used to offer anyone who complained about the newspaper business to try my job for a week. I never had any takers but I don't think they would have lasted a day. People see a pretty photo and a few words and  think they just jumped on the page all by themselves, with maybe the help of the push of a button on my camera. There were many steps that had to happen before one of my photos made it to the newspaper and into people's homes. And just as there were a lot of people making sure that photos and words got to you, there are a lot of people making sure our children get good educations. Everyone from the custodians to the administrators have  their importance in our children's educations.

How can I compare teaching our children to taking photos? I can't, but you get the idea about hard work - if you think anyone has an easy job, try it for a day. Teachers truly have hard jobs, and probably one of the most important jobs in the country, because they have our future in their hands.

Children are our most important resource and to understand how hard a teacher's job is is an important part of being a good parent. Education begins at home. Optimism and support by parents not only for their children but for their teachers, is a crucial step in helping your child get the best out of their education. So, with the 2010-2011 school year beginning today, I encourage parents everywhere to support both their children and their  teachers. Give those teachers a "Thank you" every once in awhile. And pitch in in a positive way whenever you can. A little extra help makes a big difference in your child's education.

Now that's a big crab!

It's going to be a good year for sports at Crisfield High School!

Oh, I hope I get a least a "C" in English. When I have time to write I do a great job, but posting photos comes first and all you get here in the way of copy is a first draft.

what's the red stuff?

Your school has a crab, mine has a whale and an octopus.

Ann, you don't have that in New Zealand? Why it is Old Bay seasoning, of course! Just kidding. It is bark that had been dyed red. You can buy all kinds of dyed bark to fancy up your yards in the U.S. I'd like to see those whales and octopi go at it!

Will you take Crabby to visit his big, blue cousin? I would guess keeping track of the names of everyone was a major headache for photographer and writer! I have enough trouble just remembering the place names.

Lew: That is a good idea. I have been so busy I have not had time to take Crabby Crab out for a walk.

Keats: Yep! That sure says Crisfield!
