Crisfield Firefighters

"So as you look at the firefighter with his rake, hose or axe,
His beet red face or ice covered mustache,
You should know why he goes through that smoky front door,
And is forced to crawl like a baby down on the floor.
He does it to save both lives and property,
All that is precious to you and to me.
So take a good look at this modern warrior who serves his call proud and true,
And know that he would die just to save me and you."

~ Robert J. Athans

Last week, the phone rang. "Can you cover a fire?"  I did.

On many occasions I have expounded on my love and respect for those who protect us. Whether it be our law officials, EMS or firefighters, the people who work tirelessly to protect us deserve our gratitude in a million ways.

Luckily, no one was harmed, and by the time I arrived, it was mostly a smoke fire. The wind was not kind, and with no rain for weeks, it was like a tinder box. When I left, the firefighters were still hard at work. About the time they put this fire out - I think the fire started while someone was burning trash - they responded to a house fire. Keep in mind, as you view these photos, that these firefighters are volunteers.

Thank you, brave men and women!

And thanks for saving those chickens and geese. I had wandered into a neighboring yard, where someone had a few chickens and baby geese in a pen. I could tell from the blackened ground that the fire had spread right up to the nesting house.

Thanks to Elaine - A Scattering - for the following post:

Hi Patty, this is a wonderful post. The depth of the photos and the brilliance of the colors is incredible. You've done these heroes proud.

I am sorry, Elaine. I was using my BlackBerry to moderate this post and accidentally hit the reject tab.
