Charity begins by reaching out...

Charity begins by reaching out...
The road is long
with many a winding turn
that leads us to who knows where?
Who knows where?
But I'm strong
strong enough to carry him,
he ain't heavy, he's my brother.

So on we go,
his welfare is of my concern,
no burden is he to bear
we'll get there.

For I know
he would not encumber me,
he ain't heavy, he's my brother.

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
that everyone's heart
isn't filled with the gladness
of love for one another.

It's a long, long road
from which there is no return,
while we're on the way to there
why not share?

And the load
doesn't weigh me down at all,
he ain't heavy he's my brother.

He's my brother,
he ain't heavy, he's my brother.

Tis the season that many people open up their hearts and pocketbooks to those in need. Around Crisfield, we have many people who don't let the season's dictate their giving habits. Thanks to this fine group of people who not only provide free food to those in need, but lend a hand to children at risk. They also have a wonderful little chapel located at Somers Cove where all are welcome.

Plates are prepared for delivery to the home-bound.

A grateful diner thanks a volunteer.

Did you know that the title of the above song has many associations? One dates back to Boys Town, when founder Father Flanagan saw a simple drawing in a 1940's Christmas edition of the Louis Allis Messenger, published by the Louis Allis Company, a company that provided an array of electric motors used in the war effort. The illustration depicted a young boy carrying his brother - the caption, "He ain't heavy Mister - he's m' brother!" moved Father Flanagan so much that he contacted the company for permission to use the drawing and caption. Boys Town added color to the illustration and changed the line to read, "He ain't heavy, Father...he's m' brother." The simple but meaningful sentence became the official motto of Boys Town. It's a good line to live by.

That's a good line to live by for sure. It's always somewhere in my mind. I love the lyrics too.
