July 4th, 2012 Fireworks on National Mall in Washington, D.C.

July 4th, 2012 Fireworks on National Mall in Washington, D.C.

I had several places in mind for photographing fireworks, and I had procured a press pass to the Capitol 4th grounds, but the reflecting pool always makes for dramatic photos. After photographing the parade and lugging all my gear on a 100-plus degree day to the reflecting pool, I found the water had been drained due to construction, and fences were blocking access to grounds around the pool.

Getting around D.C. on a good day is a nightmare but with roads closed for security, and a million people hailing taxi cabs, I decided to stayed put. It was a bad choice, but I was so hot and tired I didn't care.

I love taking photos of fireworks but these photos are some of my worst since I began shooting in the eighties. Location means a lot when you are shooting fireworks. I was trying to shoot with 3 cameras and the show was extremely short. As photographers know, it takes a few seconds to adjust your settings and each color-change requires a quick adjustment. No, I don't shoot on auto. I am a manual kind of gal. Goes back to the days when you had to actually be a photographer to take a photo.

I have more fireworks to post, as well as photos of the July 4th parade, I hope to get to them in the coming week. In the meantime, enjoy some random photos, sans the reflections. Ugh!
