Crabbing in the Rain

It is not crabbing season yet, but on this rainy day I went to my weather folder to find a rain photo.I took this last fall near our home when it was still crabbing season.

Crisfield is a great place for crabbing, and people around here will stand out in any kind of weather to catch those little buggers - or the big buggers. We have some big ones! Come on down, up, or over (wherever you are) and sample our famous Crisfield crabs!

When crabbing season starts up again I will post a photo of chicken-necking. Anyone know what that is?

Great photo, when does crabbing season begin? I can only guess that chicken-necking is maybe using chicken necks for crab bait? Do tell!

I don't know if I want to guess! But I know to catch stone crab in Key West, you put out a barely punctured can of cat food, then when you go out in the morning, if you only want a couple of claws, you pull one claw off of each crab, leaving one to defend themselves. You throw the bugs back to regenerate the claw, and you freeze the claw you just took. When you ahve a couple of full bags of claws, you boil them and serve with Key Lime Butter. And no, I don't eat 'em!

I can not wait to hear what chicken-necking is! We used to go "craw-dad" (crayfish) fishing in IL when we were kids and visiting with my dad's family, and we would catch them with chicken bones. So it might have something to do with that. If crayfish like them, crabs might too!

Marilyn: You are only 3 hours from Crisfield. You come on down this summer and we'll show you some "real" seafood.

PBH: Some people got it right. Chicken necking is when you tie chicken necks (I can't touch them) on a string and put them in the water and wait for a crab to come along. Then you slowly pull the string in and grab them with a net.

When we first moved here we walked to the dock near our house and were puzzled at seeing people pulling in stings. We rushed out and got our supplies and spent a whole day with the locals talking and chicken necking.

The next day, we returned with a cooler full of beer, and stayed until the sky turned red.

J9: That sounds gross.

Loida: Potato chicken necking? What the heck is that?

Joanne: Crabbing season begins April 1, in Maryland. Yea!

We invite everyone to come to Crisfield to enjoy the best crabs around. Check out our Crisfield links on the side bar for important events.

It is going to be a great summer!

Count me in for your photo club. :) Thank you, I feel honored that you invited me. Houses for Friday? Sounds good.

Chicken necking sounds awful...I have never had crab, I am thinking I need to do a road trip this summer and check out Crisfield. :)

We will be happy to have you join our shoot out. We like to have everyone post their photos late Thursday evening or early Friday, so we can get them linked before the post gets old.

As for visiting our town, we would love to have you! Check out our Camber of Commerce link on the side bar for events. I will also be putting up a link this evening to our events site.

Right now, I gotta run.

And give a yell when you visit. We will give you a real taste of the Eastern Shore, Maryland crab style.

Ahh! I chicken neck every summer. :D My grandparents live on the bay so we'd visit all the time and after we'd catch some crabs my grandmother would make us soft shell crab sandwiches. Now that most of us are "all growed up" it doesn't happen as often but we still try to fit it in. We chicken neck when we go to Ocean City every year with the other side of the family too. Aw, good memories. Thanks for the post.

Hi Patty,

It must be high class crabs in USA with them eating chicken necks.

In Borneo, my dad used to get smelly rotting fish. No wonder he didn't get many crabs. LOL

Tomorrow, I will post my bro-in-law crabbing in a very dry Australia. No need for rain coats.

Cheers,

Ann
