Still iced-over in Crisfield but it makes for nice photos

Mar-Va Theater in Pocomoke

Won't you come with me to Pocomoke City, Maryland (we call it Pocomoke around these parts) for a tour of the Mar-Va Theater?
The Mar-Va Theater first opened in 1927. A ticket would set you back ten-cents.
The theater has a rich history, being used for both silent films and vaudeville. In the old days actors like Tom Mix, Roy Rogers, Hop-a-Long Cassidy and Smiley Burnett passed though the hallowed doors.
The theater was shut down years ago. But when you love something you don't let it die, especially something so germane to your past.
Realizing that, some of the good folks of Pocomoke went out on a limb and bought the declining theater in 2003. Since then, a restoration program has been underway. You can learn more about how you can help preserve a bit of history at the Mar-VA site.
You can also check the site for upcoming events in 2010. I think it is going to be a very good year.
FYI: The name Mar-VA comes from a combination of Maryland/Virginia. Pocomoke is located about 30 minutes from Crisfield, near the Virginia line, on the beautiful Pocomoke River. The theater is within walking distance to the river. While there be sure and visit the Delmarva Discovery Center
The beautiful woman shown in the photos is the one who will bringing new life to the theater in the coming year.
A slice of America still lives in Pocomoke.
One of the original popcorn machines now helps with donations.
The lobby has been restored to its original condition. Imagine Roy Rogers walking through those doors!

Or your refreshments. Compared to the regular theaters they are a bargain.

Kudos to the people of Pocomoke for coming together and combining the past with the future. Tom Mix said, "I try to make the pictures so that when a boy pays - say, 20 cents - to see it, he will get 20 cents worth, not 10. If I drop, you see, it would be like putting my hand in his pocket and stealing a dime."
I think everyone will get their money's worth at the Del-VA Theater.

Two Ships

I admire and respect the hard work of our local watermen. I took this photo on New Year's Eve, late afternoon. When most everyone was getting gussied up for parties, our waterman were hard at work bringing in oysters.
No snow but plently of ice...

This is for Elaine, Geoff, and Gray who live in Canada. Elaine was surprised that we had such greenery in the dead of winter. I explained that the bay can sometimes save us from snow storms.
So just so you won''t think we are out basking in out bathing suits, these photos are for you. No snow. And mild weather compared to yours, but still cold enough to keep the ice around.

Chesapeake Cove Assisted Living
Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home, Chesapeake Cove Assisted Living
As everyone in the area knows, we now have a beautiful new nursing home, complete with an assisted living center. The nursing home is now open and Chesapeake Cove, the assisted living center, located on the 4th floor, will soon be open. I recently got a sneak peak, and it is gorgeous. The view of the bay is awesome. If I were a little older, I would be putting in my application for one of those rooms now.I captured the below photos of the old nursing home coming down. A new entrance will soon be in place.

Time to Exercise!

After the holidays we all begin the traditional regiments of walking, jogging, exercising, and yes, the dreaded diet. During the holidays large stores tempted us with sweets and fattening foods as we walked in the doors. Now we are greeted with diet foods. And if you look around, towards the middle of the stores, you will see the Valentine's candy is already out and will soon be pushed to the front to tempt us. But we just bought all that diet food. Ah, the power of corporate marketing.
So get up and get out, like this guy, and get ready for spring. Sounds strange to be talking about spring, but as Stephen King wrote in his book My Pretty Pony, "Time ain't got nothing to do with how fast you can count." The book is about the nature of time: how when you grow up, it begins to move faster and faster, slipping away from you in great chunks.
Oh, and the flat terrain in Crisfield is a great place to get in a little jogging time.

A Foggy Walk
