4th of July parade in Washington, DC, 2012
I've done my time in the heat taking parade photos for newspapers. I regret to say I did not weather out the entire parade in the 103 degree index. Besides, there were museums to visit and a cool hotel room that kept calling me, like an oasis in the desert.I do applaud all the participants. What talent we have spread out across our fine country, especially in our children. Having all that talent in one place was truly inspiring.
I can't continue with the photos without thanking the organizers of this huge parade. It was the smoothest-running parade I have ever photographed. No one missed a beat, at least on my beat, and it actually started on time. Most don't. Thank you, D.C. organizers, law-enforcement officials, and participants.
Oh, let me add that both law-enforcement officials and city workers were extremely friendly and helpful. It was a hot day to be nice to a million people. Kudos!
Everyone had water nearby.
Despite the searing heat, people came early.
Photographers are always prepared for the heat. I was able to shoot and leave. These poor souls had to stick it out. Even the shade was hot on the 4th of July.
It was not too hot for me to track down this young flag seller to get her story. Her mother said she was selling flags for her college fund. I would like to look her up in about 15 years. It was nice to see that the entrepreneur spirit is still alive and well.
The National Archives July 4th program came in handy in more ways than one.
Did I mention how hot it was?

I have to give a shout out here to these kids, the "Woodside One
Wheelers" from (my favorite state) Maine. The performers are in grades 3
- 9, and are from Topsham.
