Here are a few photos from the 2010 Crisfield Crab Derby carnival held on the grounds of Somers Cove Marina.   Sherwood Amusements always provide us with good, clean, family fun, and they are always accommodating to this photographer. The Time Lords are back (yes, I am a fan of Dr. Who). Due to all of the events going on this weekend and all of the photos I have to go through - not to mention a few days away from the computer and cameras for me, I have pre-posted some new photos along with some favorite photos for your weekend viewing. I will try and post at least one photo of all the events daily, but it may be well into next week before I get a lot of the weekend photos on the blog.

Time Lords love old cars. This is from a post I did last year. I have always wanted a pink caddy. If you missed the post, I had been looking at this caddy for some time but I never had time to stop. One day, with a little time on my hands and a good light, I knocked on a stranger's door and came away with these photos.

 Not a lot of time for words, but congratulations to Cristine Dryden who took first place today in the annual crab cooking contest held at the First Baptist Church in Crisfield. Read coverage in the Sept. 8, edition of the Crisfield-Somerset County Times. I will post more photos later next week.

This pageant was a wowzer! I can't say it enough - we have a cornucopia of talent in Crisfield. I was proud of each and every contestant, and what a show they put on for the audience. Everyone was a winner in my book! And I am certain the judges had a most difficult time deciding who would wear the coveted crown. 

Thanks to pageant directors Bonnie Townsend and Kathy Crockett for all their hard work - you rock!  Thanks, too, to all the volunteers and sponsors who made this another pageant to remember.

Remember, due to all that is going on this weekend, I will not get the rest of the photos uploaded until late next week - unless I get caught up. If I get a chance I will give you a sneak peek at some of the weekend Crab Derby daily events. If so, they will will be mixed in with already scheduled posts, so keep looking.

Miss Crustacean 2009-2010

Tonight we crown a new Miss Crustacean.  Not only is it a big event, it marks the official kick-off to Crab Derby weekend. I will be extremely busy this weekend, so I have pre-posted for my viewers who can't be at Crab Derby. Pre-posting means I can schedule posts to post while I am sleeping. And you thought I was awake for all those early a.m. posts. Well, sometimes I am.

I would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to Elle Hinman, our 2009-2010 out-going Miss Crustacean. It has been a pleasure having you represent us this past year. You were the candle that lit up our town with your smile. You enthusiasm, laughter and good sense of humor were contagious.  You were always eager to help, your good deeds everlasting.  Tonight, you will pass your crown on to a new representative. I know it will be a bittersweet moment but time moves on, and as each Miss Crustacean leaves us she leaves us with sweet memories of the years past and hopes for the coming year. Thanks for the memories, Elle!

I truly enjoy sharing Crisfield and the people who live here with my viewers (I say viewers because this blog is more about photography than words). I get more emails than I do posts because the majority of my viewers are not bloggers. They don't have time during their busy days to go blog-hopping. People usually find my blog  while doing searches, and I am happy to say that most people bookmark this blog and return again and again. 

There seems to be no media safe-havens today. Everywhere we turn there is bad news and politics and more bad news. 99 % of my posts are posts that make people happy. Coming from a news background where I covered a lot of bad news over the years, I can say that it makes me happy knowing that I am putting smiles on people's faces 99% of the time. Plain old-fashioned good news is a rare commodity these days, and I am happy to be part of a small niche that deals in smiley-faced news. I am also happy to be able to give people an escape, so to speak, from the daily grinds of life.  Call it campy if you like, but I know people enjoy their virtual visits to Crisfield, and every once in awhile someone finds someone and remembers. Read on.


I always have good intentions to post parts of the emails I get, but time creeps up and I lose the emails or accidentally delete them. I have been holding a comment I received three days ago. I knew if I posted it I would lose it and I wanted to share it with you. It exemplifies what this blog is all about and gives you an idea of the kinds of emails I receive.


The comment came in as Anon and was signed by Larry. 

"Eddie Heath is a genuine person. He purchased steel from me for years and this is the first time I can put a voice to a face! Until now, Eddie was always a voice on the other end of the phone. A good voice! The voice matches the person. I can still hear that unique voice in my head all these many years later. Now retired, I do what I love second most....freelance photography. Patty, great work!"

I posted this in April of 2010. In this photo, Eddie was telling me how old-fashioned he was, and added
that he liked to keep things simple, using a pencil and a telephone to do business.

You are right, Larry. Eddie is a great person. Email me one day, and we will talk photography.
